In this episode Mark Hirshberg, the creator of Brain Bump and author of 'The Career Toolkit: Essential Skills for Success That No One Taught You', discusses his background in startups, Fortune 500s, academia, and his involvement in non-profits. The conversation focuses on the misalignment of current educational systems with the needs of modern careers, advocating for the inclusion of essential skills such as leadership, communication, networking, negotiations, and ethics in curriculums. Hirshberg describes his work with MIT's Career Success Accelerator and offers insights into incorporating these skills into education effectively. Additionally, he introduces his app, Brain Bump, designed to help individuals retain valuable information from various sources. The app supports learning by providing just-in-time access and passive spaced repetition to reinforce key concepts. Hirshberg also emphasizes the importance of broadening educational content beyond traditional subjects to better prepare students for future careers.

Who am I?

I’ve been an educator in Massachusetts for 23 years.  I’m finishing my 16th year as a building leader.  I’m a teacher centered Principal and passionate about continuous improvement and the idea that success is not a destination, but a process. I’m active on social media, vlog about continuous improvement on a weekly basis, and wrote a book also called SEEing to Lead as a way to help everyone improve education as a whole by promoting my “just cause”: improving the educational experience for as many people as possible by being purposeful, acting with integrity, and building character.
